We are expecting to get a new batch of matcha from our grower by end of Sept-2025. This matcha will be at a higher price point - 15% tariff + 10% price jump from the grower.
The actual price hike from grower is significantly more. However, my supplier has agreed to "offset" the price hike - since I placed my order late last year (2024) well in advance of the sudden jump in prices. So, I expect to see the full price hike hit me sometime in 2026.
The 15% tariff though is unavoidable ...😔
The new price is effective starting Oct-01-2025 ...
Matcha prices in Japan are set via an auction that all growers participate in. This sets the national wholesale prices, but also crucially "locks in" the product to be sold to specific buyers. This year has been particularly bad since there was a drop in the harvest, and a spike in demand for matcha worldwide. Some of this demand was artificial - i.e. buyers trying to buy before Trump tariffs kick in. A lot of this demand may be speculative, and many growers expect things to settle to normalcy maybe in the next year or so 🤷.
